    Hello!   I would like to inquire about the nature of this error.  It occurred during a conversation with Sandy in the Christmas.

    A few weeks ago after the mid-late December patch I suddenly began experiencing "Unknown Hard Error" when trying to boot the game through SMAPI. I ran chkdisk, scanned for every kind of corrupted file, tested other programs (only this one), went through SMAPI logs, could find nothing. I was playing with a ton of mod so narrowing it down was neigh impossible. So finally it got so pesky (it would still boot, only error maybe 1 in 3 times or so) I started from nothing all over again. Game booted just fine, was reinstalling the expansions one by one, then I got to Ridgeside Village and had to get the Custom Companions dependency, and finally I have located the culprit. Here's my log for posterity:

    I see East Scarpe has switched to MEEP. I was only a few dozen mods in (normally play with a few hundred) and bam, Unkown Hard Error almost every single time trying to boot the game with Custom Companions on. 

    Let me know if I can do anything to help! I know maintaining mods everyone depends on is stressful, I'm sure you're aware it needs a few tweaks, but I did want to let you know because I haven't seen anyone else talking about specifically hard errors though it does appear the mod isn't working for others at the moment either...

    *edit i isolated the issue to smapi having some problem with a Bluetooth dualsense controller being connected. Doesn't throw hard errors at all when I physically plug it in. Tried rolling back and reinstalling drivers as well as DSX and everything i could think of, nothing. I reported the problem on the SMAPI post section. 

    Sorry to waste your time! It just so happened that I decided to test the game with my controller when I installed ridgeside and custom companions I guess.... though even with the controller connected it still doesn't cause problems with no mods installed. 

    The errors are almost completely random and it's driving me nuts though at least I can repeat the event with some consistency now and make it stop. Guess I'll just have to play plugged in for a while.

    Hello! Maybe someone can help me. I installed both files, the mod and the example package. but when I purchase the rings, I can't equip them. SMAPI shows me this error: [Custom Companions] Content pack Example Pack is missing a companion.json under ExampleWalkerOpenDoorTest!
    I don't know how to fix this. And how can someone follow me? Do I need the rings or is there another way? Sorry for my dumb questions ...

      Hi,

      I'm also having the same issue but I'm getting that for both ExampleWalkerOpenDoorTest!, and ExampleDynamicDistanceCompanion but don't know what to do about it as well

    Sent a Lil donation for support. I know it must be frustrating when people only show up to complain, so I just wanted to show some gratitude! If there's any info I can get for you about the "Unknown Hard Error" let me know [windows throws it not SMAPI so I imagine that's more complicated].

    Hello is there a version where it can be loaded? Because whenever I try to play the game it said that the custom companion mod couldn’t be loaded

    Hi there! Ik this is a pretty weird (and prob stupid) comment, but can you add the custom companions for 1.6.8 back into the main files? I tried looking through the file archive to try and download the version for 1.6.8 and it wouldn't let me
