Broad Overview
A short time after completing the Crimson Fleet questline, Estelle Vincent will become available as a companion if certain conditions have been met. She has 242 lines of lip-synced dialogue, which are 100% vanilla voice assets. No AI has been used. However, since Estelle has the same voice actress (Linsay Rousseau) as several other characters in the game, I was able to incorporate some decent variety into what she can say.
This is done without directly modifying vanilla Estelle, or any vanilla quests. For the uninitiated, this is a good thing. More on that later.
Romance is optional, and includes a very short mini-quest. After entering into a relationship with her, a few of her more flirtatious dialogue lines will be unlocked, and you will get access to a small pool of dialogue where you can ask how she feels about your relationship. She will also make suggestive comments when waking up, and will share your bed, but only if it's a single bed. If it's a double-wide bed, she will not use it with you. (I couldn't figure this one out.)
Her morality is the same as Mathis and Jessamine; she has no issues with you committing crimes and will actively help you if you get into a fight with security. If you have Command NPCs, you can command her to steal stuff for you. Just remember to release her from command state afterwards.
If you have NPC Routines and Store Schedules and download the optional patch file, Estelle can have random conversations with some of the robot vendors included in that mod. Specifically, the ones working at The Key Trade Authority, Jemison Mercantile, and The Den Trade Authority. Additionally, if you have that mod, you may have already found some data slates written by Estelle, related to buying large quantities of Chandra. Now it is possible to go to her room on The Key and find all the Chandra she keeps talking about (only after recruiting her).
On top of the usual combat barks and taunts, she can comment on:
Drinking alcohol
Doing drugs
Picking locks
Using Starborn powers
Boarding enemy ships
Walking around Neon
Walking around without clothes (may have to go through a loading screen for these comments to trigger)
Going to her room on The Key and stealing her Velocities or Chimeras, which she explicitly specifies are off-limits
Estelle has one rank of the Theft skill, and will periodically give you credits
Prerequisite Conditions for Recruiting Estelle
To recruit Estelle, you have to side with the Crimson Fleet, and both of the following conditions must be met:
1. You didn't rat her out to Benjamin Bayu during the quest Absolute Power
2. You chose one of the three options to give her money during the quest Absolute Power
You will not be able to recruit Estelle if you do any of the following:
1. Rat her out to Bayu
2. Refuse to give her any money when she asks you for it
3. Turn in the evidence against her to Lt. Toft, and go to talk to her in the Vigilance's brig
It is still possible to turn in the evidence against her and get her thrown in the brig, but then side with the Fleet. If you complete the optional objective to release prisoners from the brig during the final battle, you will still be able to recruit her as a companion afterwards, as long as you never talked to her while she was imprisoned. The reasoning is that as long as you don't talk to her, she has no way of knowing you were the one who turned in the evidence. This can be considered the evil way to recruit her. She will fight alongside you until you reach the Vigilance's cargo bay, after which she will stay put, then return to The Key after the battle is over.
How to Recruit Estelle - How This Mod Works and Why You Should Care
This mod has been designed to minimize vanilla form overrides, in order to minimize the potential for mod conflicts and breaking vanilla quests. To that end, the process for recruiting Estelle takes a small amount of patience. As mentioned above, vanilla Estelle Vincent is completely untouched. This mod is completely inactive until the entire Crimson Fleet questline has been completed. It works by disabling vanilla Estelle when she walks into the Last Nova, and then enabling the companion version of her.
This means that if you have other mods that change vanilla Estelle's appearance or anything else about her, or if you have used the NPC Enhancer gun on her, these changes will not carry over to companion Estelle. Also, Starfield Engine Fixes is recommended to fix a vanilla bug where mod-added NPCs lose their makeup and eyeliner. Ensure bFixNPCMakeupMod=1 in the ini file.
If you are installing this on a save where you have already completed the Crimson Fleet questline, and are currently outside of The Key, you can go directly to step 4.
1. After completing the quest Legacy's End for the Fleet, vanilla Estelle will join the other captains in the command bay of The Key for Delgado's victory speech. After Delgado's speech is over, she and the other captains will stay there. If you chose the option to turn in evidence against her, but then released her from the brig, go to step 2. If you never turned in the evidence against her, go to step 3.
2. If you chose to turn in evidence against Estelle, but then release her from the brig, she will still be present for the speech. However, you will have to go to your ship, fast travel to anywhere else in the Kryx system, then fast travel back to get her AI package to "clean up." After this is done, skip to step 4.
3. If you did not turn in the evidence against Estelle, she will stay standing in the command bay and will not be "cleaned up" until you leave The Key interior. Go all the way through the airlock into your ship, then come back. Going into the Last Nova does not work for this step, you have to go all the way into your ship, then back. Now proceed to step 4.
4. Vanilla Estelle will now go into her daily schedule of sleeping from midnight to 8 AM, then going to the Last Nova for the rest of the day. If it is currently between 8 AM and midnight, you should be able to go straight into the Last Nova for step 5.
If it is between midnight and 8 AM, wait or sleep somewhere on The Key (just not in the Last Nova). You will not be able to recruit her if she is currently sleeping in her room. It is recommended to wait until sometime after 8 AM so she has time to walk from her room to the Nova.
5. Once vanilla Estelle goes into the Last Nova, she is disabled, and her companion version is enabled and can be found by the bar. Read the data slate that is next to her first, then talk to her to recruit her. She doesn't cost any money to recruit, and will function exactly as any other elite crew.
How to Romance Estelle
One of the things you can ask Estelle about is her relationship history, but due to the way the quest is structured, you will only be able to ask about this if you are not currently inside the Astral Lounge, so have the conversation anywhere else. Romance is dependent on choosing the correct dialogue options during this conversation. If you choose the "wrong" options, you can go back through the dialogue tree and try again whenever you want.
Upon navigating the dialogue tree by choosing the "correct" options, she will give you a data slate. Read the slate, then follow the quest objective and take her to a specific location. Once you have reached the location, talk to her, and you will have the option to either friendzone her, or enter into a relationship. Your choice here is permanent, there will not be a second chance.
How to Break Up With Estelle
To break up, Estelle has to be dismissed (not actively following you) but still has to be assigned to your ship or an outpost. As long as those conditions are met, there will be a dialogue option to break up with her. If you choose it, you will have a final chance to change your mind. Should you choose to proceed with breaking up, there will be fireworks, and she will refuse to travel with you for the rest of the game! The only way to get her back as a companion will be through new game plus. You can still keep her assigned to your ship or an outpost, but she will not be happy to see you. If you unassign her, she will then refuse to be re-assigned through dialogue, although you can forcibly override this by using the crew assignment menu if you want.
Compatibility With Multi-Follower Mods
The Gang's All Here - compatible, although she will not show up under the Elite Crew tab and can't be commanded individually this way. However, she will still respond to commands given through the Command All Followers tab. Estelle's trigger comments on various actions will not be affected by any of this mod's settings for trigger comments, and will play regardless
Liga of Followers - I haven't had time to try this one out for myself yet, but since Estelle functions the same as any other elite crew, I doubt there would be too many major issues
Swiftly Order Squad - compatible
Load Order
This is a small master and is mostly load order neutral. The only vanilla form edits are for some generic affinity events (drinking, lockpicking, etc.)
According to xEdit, there are some overrides of vanilla records for The Key location form, but my understanding is this is a limitation with how xEdit displays mod-added enable/disable markers. I double-checked the plugin data in the CK, and no vanilla forms on The Key have been changed or removed. Only a few trigger boxes and enable markers are added to the Last Nova, and some drinks are dynamically added to Estelle's room upon recruiting her.
