I followed the guide on this page to set the Starfield.exe to Realtiime Priority permanently and it seems to be working. No need for some 3rd Party app.
Changing the priority in Task Manager may not stick for several reasons, mostly if the executable restarts itself. It then loses all attributes and starts again with the default ones. To permanently set the priority of a process, do this :
Find the name of the executable, say PROGRAM.EXE.
Create a Text Document with .reg extension and enter the following:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\PROGRAM.EXE] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\PROGRAM.EXE\PerfOptions] "CpuPriorityClass"=dword:PRIORITY
Replace PROGRAM.EXE with your application and change the PRIORITY to one of the following values:
Double-click to execute the .reg file and click Yes and then OK.
To undo this change, delete the registry key that you added. In addition to the CpuPriorityClassvalue, also exists IoPrioritywith the same numerical values as above, except that 0 stands for Very Low and the values 5 and 6 don't exist.
Hi man, so after this reg no more freezes? I got freezes like if I press WIN icon on keyboard which brought out Start function in windows, and switch back to game, things will be fine, do we had same type of freezes?
Hey ! I want to thank Kschip for this nexusmods page that has put me on the right path. For me, the micro freezes were indeed caused by excessive cpu heating during the game and I've been able to fix it by changing my overclocking settings, and it's all good now. For your information, for those who don't overclock their CPU, you can also limit CPU usage directly in power saving settings in Windows, but it's available only in Windows Pro if I remember correctly, but there's also a lot of reliable ways to achieve the same things, and you shouldn't install an obscure third party software to do that, just google "how to limit cpu usage windows 10 / 11", I've just tried and found several ways in win 10 and 11 including the power saving settings way. Anyway, kudos Kschip for letting me play with no freeze at all ;) LOVE
Tried this mod and it made it worse. Why? Because I have a high end card (4090) and it forces the game to be even more cpu bound and saturates the p cores in cases where the frame time is much higher than gpu busy. In many cpu bout situations this mod may make that situation worse by powering down the cpu instead of powering down the gpu! Powering down the gpu (afterburner) takes the load of the cpu and reduces stutter/microstutter greatly in my case. That said it works for some systems which is great.
Just adding that this helped me with the menu lag on a 3050ti on a zephyrus G14 laptop (the lag does come back, but much later now, good time for a break anyway)
anyone tried this with FO4? i have a decent high tier rig, still getting spikes along with smooth 90+ fps 4K gameplay, the stutterings are there, everytime it stutter, the GPU usage dropped to 40% from 99%, so im wonder if this will work with FO4
After f*#@ing around for the last couple hours trying everything to fix the stuttering and audio cutting out i have found this mod and it has FIXED IT!
i have razer cortex + reduce memory + cpubalance (probalance) and i still get ungodly lags and even ctd... i have 16gb ram but i set 42gb pagefile in hope of getting some vram but nothing... i have amd cpu and gpu as well... god damnit ;/
Well holyyyyy crap... I don't believe it. Finally! Thank you so much for this! I stopped playing because of the constant stuttering and my game runs so much smoother now. Thank you a million times over for sharing this fix!
