As of Aug 2024 this mod technically works. But it will completely remove all textures from the windows. No internal reflections. It won't look like glass. It will look like hole in your ship. I think it might still be better than the default textures though.
Update: Mod works fine even with square/rectanlge portholes on some Habs (like Stroud Eklund). Portholes are way cleaner and my views are now spectacular 📷 . ------- Does it currently only affect the round-hole portholes (the ones you see in images)? The Stroud-Eklund habs have square/rectangular portholes and they seem to still have grime. Clearer to see on ground, but hard to see the ones in space. Had to use flashlight for it; look at the bright spot. See dev response below
that's pretty much the intended result since using clearer materials would result in something that isn't noticeable under most circumstances, so the whole thing ends up looking like it doesn't have glass at all; to clarify, I've used the same material that's applied to all cockpits, and I think the devs were intending for it to look like frost buildup from space exposure rather than actual grime as most cockpit windows have a separate material layer for dirt.
but if you'd like, I could see about making an optional with even clearer glass.
Sorry, my bad. Tested with mod disabled and noticed the portholes were way dirtier (https://imgur.com/a/nVnZbmZ) I normally avoid the portholes, so probably forgot how grimy they are. Besides, I had to use flashlight to even notice the 'frost buildup' effect, so I think it is fine as-is. Will update top-level post.
Now I can enjoy my views from my ship without constantly thinking about sending a crew member on a spacewalk with a mop. Thanks for making this mod!
Need clarification: are we talking about these portholes being able to see through from the outside? This is what I have been waiting for.
I got a great idea to use bottom and top porthole in the same spot, so I can "supposedly" see the the top and bottom floor through a glass floor/ceiling. But it doesn't work in Vanilla because these glass act like 1 way glass. I hope a mod can change it.
no - the exterior models are a separate mesh that aren't affected by this mod, but I actually did try earlier what you're suggesting.
it works perfectly when in space, but once you're on the ground the interior stops being rendered altogether when you're outside and is basically treated like an entirely different cell (deliberate decision to save resources I imagine - hence the loading screen when entering/leaving the ship in the first place), so you end up seeing the empty void instead of your fancy ship interior.
novagalacticat, oh this is perfect. Can you publish that mod?
Yes, I expected exactly what you asked. Because ship interior and exterior are 2 different cells. When you are on ground, and outside the ship, the world is fully rendered and interactable. The ship interior is not rendered. When you are inside the ship, the world is rendered barely enough but nothing is interactable, while the ship interior is fully rendered and interactable. It is easy to test by using "tcl" while outside and inside. You can go "inside" the ship using tcl, you see nothing but empty space inside. The solid porthole windows are meant to cover this up.
Seigncor, yes, they purposely render the cockpit and only the cockpit. They intend to show the ship's pilots even from outside. However, as I mentioned above, you can "tcl" inside the cockpit, you can't do anything there. You can't sit down, can't access cargohold or anything.
Finally got around to looking at it. It does look weird in shipbuilder. And also looks stupid from outside the ship (because it shows the hollow interior of the hab). I think this is still a good trade off, now that I can see through the porthole. Thank you so much.
