So I did this one again, 125 plague hearts on Nightmare in Cascade Hills with another mod, Freak Mix, took me 30 days to destroy all of the hearts, and by day 33 beat it with Sherriff. I lost a few people early on but as I progressed only gained to my zombie killing plague heart destroying team. This was a lot more challenging with the Freak Mix, and having every variety made it a lot more fun.
Update 2025-4-23 :
Spoiler:
Show
Beat Lethal which was my first time on this difficulty using a keyboard and mouse, but using this mod, Freak Mix and Smart AI Humans (not too smart, but seemed to fix a few things about them), Cascade Hills, randomly selected. I didn't notice how many days it was since the game only displays it briefly once each day, but I think was mid 20s which was definitely fast for Lethal with 117 plague hearts, for me anyway given I didn't even think I would succeed. Yeah, this time I got a count since I chose my leader this time before wiping them all out, so it wasn't 125, still 8 shy of that was quite the task, and even more that the game gave me two black plague hearts, I destroyed one and like a half hour later another showed up, thank goodness was later in the game.
I did struggle to the point of not sure if I would survive at the start of the game, took me a long time to get enough supplies and give my team more of a chance at safety and to recover since at the start building supplies were very low and then fuel, had plenty of meds throughout the game though and never got to starving either, and ammo was good until near the end when the game forced me to build an armoury and then told me to craft ammo or explosives from it and I wasted a lot as it wasn't updating the quest so I had to close the game and once I got back in it corrected it, though I had no ammo for a bit after that, stupid game and its glitched quests (like Skyrim, I hate quests that I mandatory, too many times they break). I had two people die (which is quite a bit less than I have had on Nightmare difficulty), one to each black plague heart, the first got it down halfway, the second non-survivor blew up with it when the explosive zombies went kaboom (yeah, those ones can be a blessing or a quick end to you). What I am surprised is that my initial three survivors survived to the end. Did have some issues with leveling though, no matter how many zombies I shot, not a single one of my people would level past 5, and some weren't leveling in other categories.
Had a really dangerous control issue that happened suddenly a handful of times while fighting, that when I would climb, be it through a window or over a fence or wall, as soon as my character landed on the ground, they'd be stuck for over a second before I could move again, nearly got killed several times because of this, first time experiencing this problem. Bad enough that I occasionally get stuck in a window sill and can't get out, and they just had to make that unstuck thing in the menu and all the way at the bottom that trying to select that while being assaulted by a ton of zombies while stuck in a window, was almost a goner in my last game, but this new issue with being frozen for a second after climbing or leaping over something, is as if the game is inventing new way to win by screwing with things that it shouldn't.
I'm not sure though if I would have beaten this difficulty, at least even if I had certainly would have taken much longer had I not got lucky with a merchant and decided to buy the Advanced Biochem Station which I wasn't sure I'd even be able to use or if it would help, but it did, immensely. So with the hundreds of plague heart pieces that I had in stock and all of the meds that I continued to get seemingly far more than other stuff I was able to make a lot of ScentBlock, with that, destroying plague hearts was much easier. So I would equip my survivor with between one or up to three of those and always a plague cure or two and go from one building to another, running as fast as I could, smash one, take off for the next one when it did its attack or when those occasions that somehow one zombie or feral would see through my foul scented disguise, and I'd be going back and forth between two, three, sometimes a half dozen heart locations before I either had to retreat back to an outpost or use another scent block if I had it. If it weren't for being able to easily craft so many of those I would have been struggling and having to be ever more cautious as I was at the beginning. And by the end, going against the Coalition, Zombait, my last few ScentBlocks (ran out of plague heart pieces completely some time before that and made sure to save those last few for the final battles) and a half dozen Bloater Gas Grenades that were gifted to me by a stranger that I helped, so the very last battles with the hostile humans were easy.
So 19 days all 125 plague hearts destroyed, by day 20 looted everything that I could find (forgot the swamp though), and defeated the Coalition at the end of day 21. This many hearts were quite the task, a worthy one, because when I play the game with the normal amount, even when I used to do Lethal, if I didn't loot enough before destroying them all I got bored once the hearts were all gone. So I'm definitely going to keep this mod and play it again with them all, though the Realistic Respawn while at the start is very hard actually becomes too easy later so maybe will try the normal game spawning, or maybe something else to spice things up. I'd say there is a negative as far as challenge goes with plague hearts overwhelming the map, is that there's no shortage of supplies, by the end I had well over a hundred for food and everything else was also over the storage limit, but the realistic respawn mod also helped with that given how few zombies there are after a while, so unless I was tackling plague hearts there wasn't much danger for areas that were already cleared of them. I enjoyed this mod immensely, thanks again.
So still playing on Nightmare in Meagher Valley with the Realistic Respawn and the 125 plague hearts (now much less since I done destroyed so many) and because of the spawning of zombies being much less than the original game without that mod while super difficult at first has become rather easy, as areas cleared of plague hearts barely have any zombies at all, though those still with plague hearts while a ton of those still doesn't feel that difficult. I suppose if I were playing the normal spawning with all those hearts I would be struggling a bit more, I dunno. I just got through taking out 12 plague hearts in one turn, just one survivor with enough meds and energy drinks, one plague cure and a med kit, and just hit one until either the heart would send out its shock wave or if I was only able to get a few hits and flee to another before the zombies and feral got atop me. Back and forth from house to house or business whacking hearts until I had all within that area destroyed.
This all started with the Jester Chick place on the west side of town because of the curveball sending all of the plague zombies into a frenzy, so that was the first to go, and after that every single place from the gas station to the strip mall and the houses, a dozen in total destroyed with almost entirely melee and a lot of energy drinks to keep me going, or snacks when those few times I ran out until a destroyed plague heart offered me some more. Near the end when only two hearts left I did have to use the plague cure and med kit because I downed a feral, started stabbing it and got hit by plague zombies, and this happened twice, though I am surprised I managed to do that well given using a keyboard and mouse isn't as precise and sometimes I mess up and get my fingers out of place and press the wrong buttons.
Taking a short break trying to calm my nerves. I have a group of six, and just recently moved into the farmhouse by the river, did have seven people but one was killed some time ago by hostile humans that one hit shot her down and she was beat to death by the other two, almost lost another from another hostile group, lowest I ever seen my health and actually survive, thankfully the juggernaut killed them all and given the low spawning of zombies since it was in a cleared area nearest home I was able to get back safely on foot. The humans, all NPCs are just annoying as such every time I clear out all plague hearts I dread those battles. I am enjoying the Realistic Respawn and all those plague hearts, makes the game feel more rewarding, like I'm truly accomplishing something in this game world, wish I could use the keyboard and mouse well enough to play on Lethal, but even with a controller that was crazy tough, at least on Nightmare destroyed hearts also destroys all plague zombies nearby, and don't have those insanely strong plague ferals either, though having an occasional one would spice things up a bit.
So from what it looks like in glancing over my map I may have somewhere around 20 plague hearts left, a handful left on the west side and the rest all at the south, but given how I just took out a record amount for myself at once, if I can repeat that I'll crush them all in short time once I get down there, for now, time to scavenge all of those recently destroyed hearts and locations. Anyway, having a ton of fun with these mods, thank you for making and sharing them.
So after completing Trumbull Valley with the Realistic Respawn mod on Nightmare, I needed to see if I upped the challenge whether I could survive. I am in Meagher Valley, Nightmare, Realistic Respawn and 125 plague hearts. First thing I did is run around with my trio collecting what I could before the zombies started spawning too much, thankfully there was a pickup truck parked at the Survivalist Store, so each time we gathered up things to drop off at the temporary base, rucksacks were put into the pickup truck. Interesting while out and about the zombies decided to attack that temporary base, weird, but better that's out of the way, at least they won't be attacking the house right away when we move in.
Once the truck was full we drove to our new home, only to have a single zombie on the yard that roared and alerted everybody, was crazy and I thought the game would be over as several dozen zombies and three ferals attacking and other freaks moving in. Got back into the truck, splattered half of the undead forces and took off, came back a little while after to a much clearer yard. But I had to get the materials in right away and get the medical section built as the survivor that I was using was plagued with just 5 minutes until death, but without enough plague samples had to check her in to slow the plague. But thing is all of my survivors were plagued or heavily wounded and zombies were already infesting some of the nearby houses, so I had to immediately set up an outpost in a house across the way and with mines. It was a bit harder to clear the Tin-Roofed Warehouse because a Screamer was just screaming its head off for no reason constantly like a car alarm that you want to bust. And get this, zombies were starting to attack the base, our new home! I managed to kill that screamer and clear out that warehouse and set up another outpost just in time before the next wave which had a plagued Juggernaut accompanying them, blew them all up just before they reached the front of the house.
So that is how the realistic Respawn thing works at the start, total chaos with massive hordes and all so relentless. I wasn't sure yet if this Increased Hearts was working as only one plague heart was shown nearby, the usual one at the Cattle Homestead, but once I was able to slightly recover I went for a drive and everywhere I went that was from that Tartan Mart in the south and across the map to the other side, nearly every place or every other had a plague heart. The first one I took out was the Lakeview Farm, followed by the Renovated Barn, both being very easy with my usual method of blocking the way with my vehicle. Next I decided on the Wholesale Farm Supply, blocked one side with my pickup and found another vehicle nearby, only it wasn't easy at all, because all of the zombies were armored due to the curveball which I didn't realized until after I got out of the truck, so found myself running around a lot trying to lose them until finally got that other vehicle parked in front of the store as well, and so went inside and started clobbering the heart, but the game decided to be cheap and a few zombies, thankfully only one at a time walked through the back wall, but then a feral did as well and got me pretty good, nearly killed me, but finished it off and the heart, and then had to try to get out of there without damaging the vehicle I took off in and back home to heal up. I was still struggling to stay alive, that needed to change.
I hit up the small strip mall, parked my car on the back door of the nail salon, truck blocking the front door and windows, destroyed that heart. Backed up the truck to the next store, Sud City, as well as the car, repeated with that, and then again with Dewey's Hardware, and finally the Spoon and Cone, only those two vehicles, had a weak spot, an opening for the zombies to enter, whatever, I'll make do. Hit the heart until it cried out and ran to the Valu-Wagon, smacked that a bit, then to the clinic though the zombies were on to me by then, and a feral or two kept roaring but didn't make moves yet to attack, were on standby because too many zombies, good. I continued to use hit and run between the three locations until finally they were all destroyed in that area and then the ferals came out, got rid of them too. The nearby barn and farmhouse were next, hit and dodge, run back out and get atop truck until hearts calmed down and ferals were killed and repeated. The only way I was going to be able to get enough of this clear was to go after each aggressively, and so did the same to the small shopping area at the middle of the map, hit each heart a little and run to the next and do the same with that and back and forth until they were destroyed.
I don't know exactly how many hearts I've destroyed so far, but still am far from finished and wonder if I will be able to continue to push back the zombie hordes, destroy all of the hearts, or end in tragedy. One issue, framerate very choppy.
Obviously, I have no idea how modding works so I don't want this to sound like I'm bitching. But is there any possibility it can be changed to once this mod works for a community, it stays active even if that community changes maps? I just beat Trumbull on dread with 41 hearts (2.5x), and switched to a new map on Nightmare only to find the hearts went down to 30. Really killed my vibe.
