I inherently and strongly disagree with you, your entire position and this mod.
I think it shows you as narcissistic, self-righteous and absurdly arrogant to think that you have any right to take it upon yourself to chastise the creator of this game for their tonal and creative vision, or for you to negatively criticize it for such an absurdly personal and subjective reason. This mod is taking this game and attempting to shove a trapezoid shaped peg into a diamond shaped hole. It isn't what this game is. It isn't what this game is trying to be. You're shoving your own social opinions into a creative work that's not yours, and negatively judging it for the creative direction and vision it wants. I think your motivation, your steam review and your self-righteousness shows a seriously delusional lack of understanding of this project in general or what people who like it precisely for what it is, want from it.
If you don't like the way this game is written, go play a different game. If you need to waste your time "correcting" other video game narratives with a mod patch this arrogant and disrespectful to the game itself, your efforts would be better spent making your OWN game. Not butchering or bastardizing THIS one for the crime of not being written by you. Your steam review is awful too. Get over yourself. Go write your own narrative. Go make your own game. Don't scribble your cynical nonsense all over this one and expect anyone else but equally delusional, arrogant and entitled people to thank you for it.
I felt like adding that I have actually made my own games, 3 of which have made it to consoles (whether they're any good or not is up for discussion, but they told me to make my own games), but I dunno, I'm not really debating them. It reads more as funny than genuinely hurtful so why engage like it's a fight?
Lol imagine being so mad that you scream "modding an original work of art is bad, and both the modder AND the people who enjoy it are horrible" on the M O D - W E B S I T E
I disagree with the review too but people have made dialogue mods for YEARS now but it's just this modder is the problem? Get out of here with your delusional post. They're not forcing the dialogue changes upon you, you chose to go on their page to throw a whole ass hissy fit.
I mostly come from Stardew Valley and we have whole ass character rewrite mods there for almost all love interests and also mods to rewrite game events. This type of mods are normal in any game.
If people do not agree with the content of this mod then fine, don't download it. But acting like a self righteous prick who thinks anyone altering the game with this mod is a "narcissistic, self-righteous and absurdly arrogant" person needs to chill the f*#@ out.
EDIT: also what a dramatic name change, next time try not to sound so antagonistic and attack mod authors for something you can ultimately ignore.
Hey thanks to everyone here for the support, even those who don't necessarily like my changes or reviews. It means a lot, and again, even (and maybe even especially) if we don't see eye to eye on everything. :)
I hate to reply to this because it bumps to the top, but what an absolutely braindead take. This comment is so over-the-top that it almost seems like a troll, and given the user's name, maybe it is. Mod author did not "chastise" the developers at all. So much work goes into mod development, often times we're developing for ourselves and decide to put our work out into the world, and people get so self-righteous. They'll demand features, or like this commenter, come in and demand that the mod is bad or worse yet that mod author is a bad person! Don't like it? I don't care, it's optional, you put yourself here, move on.
How ignorant lmao, this is the whole purpose of modding. If you don't like the mod then YOU move on. Some of us appreciate this. There are countless dialogue mods in Stardew Valley but let me guess it wasn't a problem then? Get real.
BTW this mod seems awesome and I'm downloading it right now. Thank you for taking the time to rewrite the dialogue for those of us that appreciate it.
this is an incredibly strange opinion... obviously if you want to keep FOM the way it is, that's fine. but objectively, the modder does have a point. the most basic rule of writing is to have a conflict, some sort of stakes, so that there's actually a reason why the writing exists. if you could bring up a successful piece of media where every episode/chapter/section is just about how amazing the characters are and their amazing lives, i'd be genuinely shocked. of course we don't need incredibly depressing topics like alcoholism or abuse as is portrayed in stardew valley, but we need something. we can still have a nice calming game without completely lacking any substance.
there were lots of opportunities to do this in the game. make the plotline of the economic disaster more relevant. talk more about the capital/aldaria and its strange past (war of lilies, the caldosia invasion) continue to build upon march's rude attitude (why is he rude? why does he decide to soften up to the player?). expand upon caldarus' disconnect with humans + his long history with the kingdom of aldaria. it has many plotlines that could solve this lack of conflict/stakes, but they don't put to use what they've already made. which is why you're completely wrong with the "it isn't what this game is trying to be" too. this game has tons of exciting plotlines that make the worldbuilding feel rich and real, but so far it hasn't been included beyond a fleeting mention.

hi!! i just wanted to say that i love your work, i feel like steadfast brings a lot of the tone that i loved from older harvest moon and rune factory games into FOM which i just adore!
i had to uninstall though, since it was crashing me whenever new dialogue from the update on 4/14 would occur, but i have endorsed and tracked the mod! i cant wait to see more <3
I have 39 hours in-game. Have you written enough for it to be worth it for me to install? Or should I wait til you add more lines? You said you only have most of Adeline's dialogue and the intros - is that still the case, or have you not updated the description? /gen
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this project btw!
Saw your comment on the Steam review! Thank you so much!
Also completed Balor's lines (again for the most part) and anything I haven't written is replaced by the previous lines written by the creators, so I don't see any reason not to install it (also very easy to undo by clicking Verify Integrity of Game Files on Steam)
But it's also still a humble effort. Other people seem to dig the changes so I say go for it.
Big fan of the changes already just from the intro cutscene. This mod fascinates me from a writing/editing point of view--a few subtle changes in word choice do wonders to introduce a real sense of tension.
I've had troubles with progressing past the character creation screen. Replacing the localization.json file in the folder seems to work only for the intro cutscene. Clicking anything on the character creation screen forces the entire game to close. Am I missing a step?
hiya! i have .. the exact opposite opinion of the person who commented before me KSHKJS
for the longest time my friends would recommend fields of mistria to me, and i was like oh okay its cute, and played for maybe 10 hours and never picked it back up
i like the game in theory, but in practice it just... bored me. i couldnt understand why everyone was recommending it and hailing it as a farming sim better than stardew, and i think thats because everything was so pristine and perfect. i didnt realize any of that until i read your review on steam! i figured i was just bored because it was an EA game with not a lot of content, but after reading the review you left i came to the conclusion that i COULD enjoy it anyway if the characters drew me in more than they do
like, i dont really play games, especially not farming sims like rune factory or story of seasons or stardew to experience perfection? the previous games are GOOD and loved because their characters are complicated, you want to get to know them more and experience their growth and personality changes along with them
fields of mistria though a cute game just... didnt have any of that for me. youre basically immediately well liked by the townspeople, with the exception of march who comes around quickly, and the town doesnt have any real.. major issues? stardew doesnt either, to be fair, but when you play stardew youve got your own set of things to handle re: starting a farm, making enough money to sustain it, learning new skills, befriending and learning about the townspeople - things are broken, its a small secluded town with only one carpenter, so you help fix bridges and boats and things to expand the world and the people in it
fields of mistria starts off with a "we have this major issue, we're getting no money in and cant sustain the town like this, its right after an earthquake" but then you come in coincidentally and ... wow, everyones problems are solved. nobody's really suspicious of you in the beginning excluding march - you dont really have to make an effort to befriend anyone because theyre all immediately kind to you, and quirks in characters are never seen as strange or weird - more of like "haha, thats just the way they are! dont worry, itll be fixed eventually!" and then bam, it is.
caldarus, like you said, is my favorite character because he's human feeling. he wants to BE a person, to be able to do things like a person would, and expresses that in melancholy longing and the brief conversations he has with you, but you can only speak to him once a day. it feels like you get that one experience of humanity in a non-human character and then you almost go out into a world of .. barbie dolls? for lack of a better term?
i really liked rf4 and the early story of seasons games because for all intents and purposes the love interests are WEIRD. they've all got quirks that arent seen as good or bad, they're all real feeling people with their own interests and desires and stories outside of your player character, which isnt something i see in fields of mistria often.
tldr: i agree, i wish we had more weird characters and/or characters with quirks that arent immediately gotten rid of if theyre mildly upsetting or praised if theyre traditionally good. most traits in human beings are net neutral, so like eiland and adeline because they're hard workers AND siblings get into petty sibling fights because they're both exhausted, or balor struggling with his past and the stark change of trying to make it as a travelling merchant, or hell, valen having SOME kind of stress being a small town doctor
Really looking forward to seeing how this mod shapes up! Honestly, I've also felt that the characters ended up with the same problem as New Horizons, where they got smoothed down so much they became bland... No wonder March is the fandom favourite at the moment, hahah. The dialogue is looking real good so far!
This looks interesting. Do you think you could give Juniper a different plot? Her plotline feels similar to our resident Doctor. Plus our character suddenly gets turned into a doormat when we are forced to do potion testing for her. Kinda uncool how our char stays silent and let poor Olric go out having bunny ears.
I'm unfortunately relegated to exclusively changing the wording on the actual cutscenes. That said, I do feel as though our character is roped into it a little hard, huh? I think a little more natural friction between the player character and Juniper will naturally smooth over this particular complaint, at least a little.
That said, I'm glad you're interested! Do let me know what you think so far!
I like it so far, feels more organic the way they talk. Also no worries about my request. I've vaguely heard that this game is much more closed off and hard-coded. So no worries if modding events is impossible so far.
That said, I do feel as though our character is roped into it a little hard, huh?
Haha, yes! It's so weird how we get to tell March to "stuff it" or "kill it with kindness" in nearly all of his scenes, but turn into a railroad mousey doormat once we get to play Juniper's heart events. It feels off and gives me (after-2010) Bethesda main player character vibes.
Edit: Ah, just wanted to let you know that with the update 0.12.0 (18th November) this mod is currently broken. New game and saved game won't load (no other mods)
Thankfully it seems extremely fixable it'll just take a little extra time. Thank you for the heads up! Verifying the game's files and getting the old localization.json should fix the game up just fine for the meantime.
Not sure if MOMI (Mods of Misteria installer) would make it easier for you in the future to help you with compatibility issues occurring when new updates drop. So far all 3 of the MOMI mods I'm using didn't get borked by the update (2 of them change game parameters). Not sure how it fares with vanilla dialogue updates tho. MOMI does support localization modding.
I've been doing it all "raw" as it were, and I'm almost done fixing the raw localization json, so I'll probably upload that and THEN check out MOMI, but thanks! This may be a great alternative to fixing this file every time there's a new update!
this is a pretty cool concept! i'll probably check it out when it gets fixed with the update and all, but i'm honestly dying of curiosity here: what writing have you found in the game files that hasn't been implemented in the game? i'm guessing it's in the localization json file? Since it's still in EA maybe it still has a chance of being implemented in the actual game; fingers crossed!
Looking forward to this one! Your writing definitely has more of an edge and I like it a lot more than vanilla, I'm excited to see what you do with it!

@beaucoupboku it should be TOTALLY fixed now! Found a new way to upload the files with minimal chance of breaking other aspects of the game!
